Taiwan is one of the few routes where the part of the United States you fly from changes the rules. Taiwan keeps a list of countries and zones it recognizes as free from rabies, and Hawaii and Guam are on it while the rest of the United States is not. From the mainland your pet needs a rabies antibody test, a permit and seven days of post-entry quarantine, or a longer run-up that removes the quarantine. Freight on this lane is quoted per booking, so this page prices everything except the flight and explains how the flight is priced. Figures verified September 2026.
Airlines price live animals on chargeable weight: whichever is greater, the actual weight or a volume figure worked out from the crate. For pets the volume figure almost always wins, which is why crate size drives the flight cost more than the animal does. The volumetric divisor is the industry standard 166 cubic inches per pound.
No carrier publishes a live animal tariff for the Taiwan lane, so freight is priced per booking once the crate size and the dates are known. We will not print a number we cannot source. For scale, published long-haul lanes carry minimums of $690 to $720 plus a $150 processing fee, and a large crate frequently bills at 60 to 70 kilograms of chargeable weight.
Our cost estimator shows how the other lines add up while freight is quoted. Taipei Taoyuan is the practical arrival point, and the quarantine premises and the transport to them are a separate line that the facility prices rather than the airline.
Whichever carrier takes the booking sets its own hold conditions, crate rules and pet charges, and those vary more between airlines than the fares do. Our list of the airlines that carry pets internationally covers which carriers accept live animals out of the US, and our comparison of US airline pet policies puts the big carriers side by side. The freight mechanics on this page come from American Airlines Cargo, whose conditions are set out in full in our guide to the American Airlines pet policy.
| Cost | Amount | Who charges it |
|---|---|---|
| Airline freight | Quoted per booking on this lane | Airline |
| USDA export endorsement | $160 first animal, $10 each additional | USDA APHIS |
| Rabies antibody titer test | Lab fee, set by the laboratory | Approved laboratory |
| IATA crate | $65 to $378 depending on size | Retailer |
| Microchip and rabies vaccination | Set by your clinic | Your vet |
| Import permit processing | NT$100 | APHIA |
| Post-entry quarantine, 7 days | Facility and transport fees, set by the facility | Quarantine premises |
| Airline live animal processing | $150 per air waybill | Airline |
Note the endorsement line, because it is not the $101 most countries cost. Taiwan requires a rabies antibody test from the mainland United States, and once a test result has to be verified on the certificate APHIS charges from its tested band: $160 for the first animal and $10 for each additional animal on the same certificate. Rabies vaccinations are not counted toward that total, so it is the titer test alone that moves the fee. Two pets on one certificate cost $170 between them rather than $320.
Taiwan publishes two entirely separate import routes, and which one applies to you depends on where the animal is flying from. The rabies-free list covers Japan, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Iceland, Norway excluding Svalbard, Estonia, Czechia, and the US state of Hawaii and the territory of Guam.
Everywhere else in the United States takes the other route, which Taiwan calls importation from a country or zone not recognized as being free from rabies. That is the route this page prices, and it is the one that brings the antibody test, the permit and the quarantine. If your pet is moving from Honolulu or Guam rather than the mainland, tell us, because it is a materially different job.
One rule to settle before anything else: Taiwan prohibits the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Pit Bull and the American Staffordshire Terrier. For those dogs there is no plan to price.
On the standard route the permit is applied for at least 20 days before the animal arrives, and the pet serves a seven day post-entry quarantine at an approved premises. The antibody test sample has to be drawn between 90 days and one year before import, and the rabies vaccination itself has to fall between one year and 30 days before import, on an animal that was at least 90 days old when it was vaccinated.
There is a second route that removes the quarantine, and the price of it is time rather than money. Apply at least 120 days ahead and have the antibody sample drawn between 180 days and one year before import, and the seven days can be waived. Nothing about that is expensive. It simply has to be decided early, because a family that starts planning six weeks out has already lost the option.
That is the single most useful thing on this page. The quarantine is not a fee you can pay your way out of on arrival; it is a consequence of when you started.
Your vet sets their own fees. The examination, the microchip, the vaccination and the blood draw are priced by your clinic and vary between practices, so ask your vet directly. The laboratory charges separately for the antibody test itself, and every laboratory we checked states that the draw is the clinic charge rather than theirs. Quarantine premises set their own facility and transport fees. Ground transport at either end is quoted per route. Our coordination fee is included in the total we quote you and itemized on your invoice.
Crate size is the single biggest lever, because it drives chargeable weight, and on a quoted lane it is the number the carrier prices from. After that it is the timing decision above, since the waiver route trades a longer run-up for seven fewer days of facility fees. Season matters too: summer heat embargoes in the United States narrow the booking window from May onward, and a Taiwan routing usually involves a transpacific connection where every extra airport is another temperature reading. Two pets on one certificate share most of the endorsement, at $160 and then $10, while each extra pet adds its own crate, freight, test and quarantine place.
Taiwanese requirements from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency, its page on importation of dogs and cats from a country or zone not recognized as free from rabies and its quarantine FAQ. Endorsement fees from the USDA APHIS Veterinary Services user fee schedule. Freight mechanics from the American Airlines Cargo live animal pages. Government requirements change, so every figure here is tied to the authority that publishes it. Verified September 2026.
